I am Dr. S. I do a lot of looking around--and even more reading. I live in Ohio, legally, though if you ask me where I'm from, I'll probably tell you Detroit, and if you ask me where my home is, I'll probably give you a longer answer than you've bargained for--or tell you that it's here, in my hara, and that it's also everywhere, and that it's also nowhere. I move every summer, and often in the intervening months too. When I can, I head off to live in England for a year; this especially seems to happen during presidential election years.

Annie Dillard could have been writing about me when she said (of herself), "I like the slants of light; I'm a collector." Or Willem de Kooning: "I'm like a slipping glimpser." And don't forget Brenda Ueland: "I learned that you should feel when writing, not like Lord Byron on a mountain top, but like a child stringing beads in kindergarten--happy, absorbed and quietly putting one bead on after another." But the Beastie Boys might have said it best: "When it comes to panache, I can't be beat." There's a reason I have been known to wear a ring that says Badass.
